placed people in the garden to work and keep it. Jesus gathered fragments so that
nothing was lost. When we reclaim and redesign what others throw away, we
refuse despair and preach hope with wood, wire, fabric, and steel.
Prologue. The broken chair that preached
A neighbor left a chair on the curb
With a paper sign that said free. One rung was split, the finish was dull, and a leg
wobbled like a confession. In the workshop we glued the rung, clamped it square,
sanded the old lacquer, and rubbed in oil. When a single mom picked it for her
kitchen table, she cried and laughed at once. I heard a sermon in the scrape of
sandpaper. Things and people are not waste when God is in the room.
