Prologue. The first map that changed our street
We had complaints
About heat and speeding, but only stories. We walked the block with a cheap
temperature logger and a radar counter. We mapped shade, surface temperature,
and car speeds on a simple web map. The dots told a quiet truth. Three trees were
missing where pavement hit 140 degrees. Most cars sped between 4 and 6 pm. The
city planted trees, added a crosswalk, and retimed a light. Data did not replace
people. It helped the people win.
