work. Prayer is the way we start the work in the right spirit.
Prologue. The bridge where prayer began
We met at dawn on a small bridge.
Coffee in cold hands. Quiet traffic. A heron stood below us. We read, Let justice
roll down like waters, and we asked for mercy on the blocks around us. While we
prayed a maintenance truck rolled up. A worker pointed to a clogged grate and
said, If you pull that trash, the street will not flood. We pulled it. The water moved.
That morning taught us to pray with eyes open and hands ready.
